Perinatal Medicine

A subspecialty of obstetricians associated with maternal and fetal care during pregnancy , labor and delivery, particularly when either or both are at high risk of complications. Perinatal mental health refers to mental health of a woman during pregnancy and after part-time. The vast majority of perinatal mental health research examines common perinatal mental disorders (CPMDs) that are non-psychotic and the majority of studies focus specifically on anxiety and depression. And several studies have primarily concentrated on anxiety and depression. Expectant mothers expect healthy babies and excellent medical care. They are not expecting complications. So when problems occur, it is vital that they be handled immediately. The provision of adequate perinatal treatment at the primary , secondary and tertiary levels is becoming an urgent and critical issue in third world countries where maternal, perinatal and neonatal mortality rates remain at an unacceptably high level. Several studies have also documented low birth weight as a major contributory factor in perinatal and neonatal mortality. In India a large proportion of perinatal deaths are preventable. High fetal and childhood mortality adversely affect the acceptance of family planning.
