Abstract
Study of sorption properties of Cr (VI) by carboxymethyl chitosan
Author(s): J.V.Patel, Merlin ThomasCarboxymethylchitosan (CMC) was synthesized from Chitosan and monochloroacetic acid. Chitosan is a bio compatible &bio degradablematerial with numerous applications. The synthesized CMC was characterized using FTIR. Sorption of Cr (VI) ions on CMC was studied by suspending CMC in aqueous solution of potassium dichromate. The sorption behavior was studied using UV-Visible spectrophotometric measurements by varying concentrations of CMC, contact temperature and contact time. The results reveal that CMC could serve as a high capacity carrier of Cr (VI) even at very low concentration of 0.5 %.
