Author(s): Neelam Begum, C. Mayuren, K. Sateesh, K. L. Sowjanya, N. Raviteja and P. V. N. Rajesh KumarThe anti-inflammatory effect of the aqueous leaf extract of Coleus aromaticus was evaluated using the carrageenan induced rat paw edema. The extract at doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg produced significant (P < 0.001) reduction in paw edema when compared with control. The percentage inhibition of paw edema of Coleus aromaticus at 500 mg/kg was significant when compared to diclofenac sodium 10 mg/kg at 3rd and 4th hours of study. The results obtained suggest that the aqueous extract of Coleus aromaticus exhibited potent anti-inflammatory activity, which may be due to inhibition of mediators released from 2nd phase of inflammation.
