Author(s): Okenwa Uchenna Igwe and Donatus Ebere OkwuA bioactive compound identified as 2-(4-ethylphenyl)-5-hydroxy-3-methyl-6,7-dihydrofurochromen- 4-one was isolated from the seeds of Brachystegia eurycoma Harms by employing column and thin layer chromatographic methods. It was than characterized by IR, 1H NMR and MS spectroscopic data. The compound showed potent free radical scavenging activity at minimum and maximum concentrations of 100 μg/mL and 500 μg/mL, respectively. This investigation suggests the use of the compound in the treatment of diseases and ailments mediated through free radical activities. It also authenticates the use of B. eurycoma plant in the treatment of wounds in herbal medicine in Nigeria.
